Carpet Types:

Multi-level loop: The loops in this carpet are of different heights, giving it a unique patterned effect. It is very durable and hides foot-traffic well. Also known as "high-low" pile carpet.

Level loop: In level loop carpet all of the loops are the same height. It has a casual appearance and is very durable. Commercial quality carpets usually use the level loop configuration.

Velvet: This is a an elegant carpet with a tip-sheared surface. Its great for formal areas that don't receive much foot-traffic.
Saxony: This is a smooth, versatile carpet used mostly in formal areas.

Textured Saxony: This carpet has a textured surface which is great for hiding footprints, which makes it perfect for high-traffic areas.

Frieze: This is an extremely durable textured carpet, great for rooms with a lot of activity.

Random sheared: Random sheared carpet produces a carved effect which also serves to hide foot-traffic.

Carpet fibers:

Nylon: Nylon is the most widely used carpet fiber, primarily because of its low costs, brilliant color, and ease of maintenance. Nylon will stretch up to 33% of its length and still return to its original position. This makes it great for high-traffic areas. Nylon is also very mildew resistant and dries quickly.

Polyester: Polyester is less durable than Nylon but offers greater softness. Polyester is resistant to color fading but is not very stain resistant, particularly to oily stains.

Olefin: Olefin (polypropylene) does not resist matting and crushing as well as Nylon but it is very stain, static, and mildew resistant. This fiber can be used in either indoors or outdoors and is common in grass-pile carpets.

Acrylic: Acrylic offers a simulated wool look and is used primarily in level loops and various velvet styles.

Wool: Wool performs very well as a carpet material but is rather expensive. Wools soil hiding abilities are superb do to the fact that it is an opaque fiber while synthetic carpet fibers are clear. Wool is also easy to clean because when moist the fibers swell thus releasing dirt.
